Wildland Engine Replacement Desperately Needed!
Friends of Smith Valley Fire District is currently fundraising to to replace our outdated, overweight, mechanically challenged Type 6 wildland engine. This engine is currently OUT OF SERVICE due to several mechanical and safety issues.
The apparatus we are attempting to replace is:
1993 Ford F-350
7.3L IDI Diesel (non-turbo)
4x4, Manual transmission
Mileage – 167,000 – the truck was previously an old Harp Line truck that had a PTO on the transmission – unknow hours on engine and transmission. The transmission broke this past winter, and we replaced it with a used transmission from a local wrecking yard.
Engine – has low compression.
Chassis – overweight for standard DOT rating
Our non-profit organization Friends of Smith Valley Fire District has been working on raising funding to replace the aged apparatus. Between pancake breakfasts, The Western Round-Up (a family fun day), and a riffle raffle over the past two years they have raised approximately $12,000.00 towards the estimated $190,000.00 to build a Type 5 Wildland Engine in house. If we were to purchase a new engine from a distributor the cost would be closer to $240,000.
Thank you for your consideration.
